Introduction
This workshop is delivered in five sessions and combines two very distinct printmaking processes: monotype and silkscreen. Monotype provides a very direct and painterly method for creating non-repeatable imagery, allowing artists to work intuitively and quickly, often with unexpected results. By contrast, the silkscreen process will be used to create repeatable images, produced both photographically and drawn by hand.
Having considered these processes independently, the workshop will explore the potential to create unique and interesting imagery through the combination of these two very different techniques. Further experimentation in image manipulation will be encouraged through the application of a range of additional media – drawing, painting, sewing and any other processes that the artist might consider appropriate.
The type of outcome will vary greatly for each participant – some may primarily use monotype with minor screen elements, whilst others may rely almost entirely on the repeatable silkscreen imagery. Although the workshop will be held on five consecutive Saturdays, participants should be prepared to work independently between sessions in order to develop ideas and imagery.
Participants in this workshop may elect to submit work for Made in Tashkeel 2009, to be held in the gallery from 18 June – 20 August 2009. Inclusion in this exhibition is not guaranteed but is at the discretion of the curator.
