ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY: Beginners/Calligraphy in Design
Workshop leader: Wissam Shawkat
This workshop is aimed at those working in the fields of design and visual communication. The workshop will be a combination of theoretical presentations and practical experience, providing an introduction to Arabic calligraphy for beginners and considering the use of Arabic calligraphy in developing design solutions.
The workshop will look at different examples of Arabic calligraphic styles, analyzing the characteristics of each style and how it might be used as part of a design solution. Emphasis will be placed on the use of Arabic Calligraphy as a modern art form and the use of calligraphy in contemporary design.DIGITAL ART
Workshop leader: Jalal Luqman
Emirati artist Jalal Luqman will be having a solo show in the Tashkeel gallery during the month of February. This workshop will explore the techniques Jalal uses when making his own work and provide the opportunity for participants to practice these skills in making their own works. The workshop is aimed at artists/designers with intermediary level skills in Photoshop and Corel Painter.EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Workshop leader: Jack Payne
Working primarily in the darkroom, this workshop will provide the opportunity to experiment with alternative techniques for creating photographic prints. Participants will be encouraged to develop their own processes and methodology for creating unique images, and to be prepared to break the rules in the interest of achieving unexpected and unpredictable results.FASHION: SAMPLE MAKING TECHNIQUES
Workshop leader: Jill Hoyle
Knowledge of the processes involved in making a garment enables a fashion designer to better resolve their design ideas. This workshop is intended for people with little or no previous experience in garment construction, but with an interest in fashion and ambitions to realize their own design ideas.
The workshop will cover: seams, finishes, openings and fastenings, collars and cuffs, the handling of textiles and the use of basic sewing machines.FELTMAKING
Workshop leader:Lisa Widemann
FELT is considered to be the oldest material made by man from wool fibres. Nomadic people from Central Asia started making felt thousands of years ago and even today, Turkey and Kirgistan are still leading countries in the craft of felt making.
This course will teach the traditional way of felt making using sheep and camel fibres. In addition, there will be opportunities to experiment with silk and cotton fabrics and participants will be encouraged to develop these to create two and three dimensional shapes.
PHOTO WORKSHOP
Workshop leader: Mark Pilkington
This workshop is primarily designed to introduce and explore analogue photographic practice. Working to a given theme, participants will make and print black and white photographs that will be used to make a final 2D or 3D constructed image. The constructed image will then be photographed in the studio to make the final piece.
This workshop will cover: idea generation /working with 35mm slr film cameras /film processing /analogue printing and working in the photography studio.STUDIO TEXTILES
Workshop leader: Felicity Payne
This workshop will be taught by freelance textile designer, Felicity Payne, this workshop will explore traditional and experimental ways of creating unique textiles through a range of dyeing and printing techniques.
