In the early 1970’s graffiti began as an underground movement in the subway tunnels and backstreets of New York City. People had no place to apply graffiti other than on public property. Today, however, graffiti artists have taken their work into a more developed environment. Those who were once considered vandals became artists and their work was recognized for its creative values. Advertising companies began commissioning graffiti artists and they slowly made their way into displays at art shows.
Participants in this workshop will learn the fundamentals, styles and roots of graffiti as well as the way in which it has evolved with time. They will create simple characters, develop them into bubble letters and final full colour pieces. They will also learn to apply essential methods like the use of colour and character, all which interplay into making the most essential feature of a graffiti artist having an individual style.
